GENERAL

The Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course (AUCSC) is organized to provide both technical and nontechnical presentation of the practical and theoretical aspects of the causes of corrosion, instrumentation, corrosion surveys, cathodic protection, pipe coatings, and miscellaneous methods of corrosion control. The course is designed for personnel whose work requires a practical knowledge of underground metallic corrosion. The course provides both elementary and advanced treatment of corrosion control subjects.

HISTORY OF AUCSC

Since 1956, West Virginia University has been the site of the Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course. At the first Short Course, held in June 1956, 326 people attended. There were 43 classes in five sessions and 26 exhibitors. By contrast, today's Short Course consists of about 140 classes in nine sessions, over 90 exhibitors, and approximately 1,000 students. During the Short Course's early years, classes were held on WVU's downtown campus. In 1966, the Short Course moved to its present location on the Evansdale Campus, the site of WVU's engineering, agricultural and forestry schools.

The organization of the Short Course has changed little since its inception. Over 100 representatives from industry, government, and education comprise the General Committee. Each member of the General Committee belongs to one or more of the various committees responsible for coordination of the Short Course. These include: Programs, Exhibits, Finance, Registration, Publicity, Membership, Testing, and Curriculum. The Executive Committee is comprised of the General Chairman, Past Chairman, the Chairman of each committee, the Executive Advisor, and the Secretary/Treasurer.

The AUCSC Executive and General Committees, West Virginia University, and representatives from industry and government have cooperated to provide high-quality technical presentations, as well as discussions on practical and theoretical aspects of the causes of corrosion, instrumentation, corrosion surveys, cathodic protection, pipe coatings, and miscellaneous methods of corrosion control. AUCSC has produced a library of proceedings unparalleled by any other corrosion school. These, along with text books for the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced courses, serve as excellent reference materials for corrosion personnel.
