History of AUCSC
Many locations were considered before West Virginia University
was selected as the most suitable
for the first Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course in 1956. Since 1956,
WVU has enabled the AUCSC to maintain minimum participant cost. The registration fee in
1956 was $10.00; in 2011, it stands at $125.00. Attendance in recent years has included
over 1,000 corrosion personnel annually. The organization of the short course has changed
little since inception. Over 100 representatives from industry, government, or education
comprise the General Committee. Each member of the general committee belongs to one or
more of the various committees responsible for coordination of the school.
At the first school, held in June, 1956, 326 people
attended. There were 43 classes in five sessions
and 26 exhibitors. By contrast, the 2011
school consists of about 140 classes in 9 sessions, 90+ exhibitors and over 1,000 students. During the earlier
years of the school, classes were held on the downtown campus. The rooms were not air
conditioned, the weather was usually not and we really "sweated out" the
classes! Exhibits were set up in the old Field House; tarpaulins protected the wooden
floors, and lunch was served on the bleachers.
In 1966, the school moved to its present location
on the Evansdale Campus, the site of WVUs engineering, agricultural and forestry
schools and medical center. Classroom facilities are excellent, well equipped with modern
visual aids and comfortably air conditioned!
The AUCSC has produced a library of proceedings
unparalleled by any other corrosion school. These, along with online text books for the Basic,
Intermediate and Advanced courses provide the corrosion worker with excellent reference
material. We estimate that through the 2011 school, our total attendance has been over
50,000 people. Recognizing that about one-half of each years attendees are first
timers, we can safely say that we have educated about 27,900 individuals.
